OPEN LETTER TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SECURITY DOG USERS
The Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group (DDASG) appreciates the feedback we have been receiving in regards to the Dog Control Bill we are currently working on with Lord Redesdale. DDASG thank you for bringing to our attention the possible problems which might arise for Security Dog Users other than a Constable or a person in the service of the Crown (for whom an exemption already exists). The intention of the Bill is not to penalise such people and we will therefore be looking at putting forward an amendment to the Bill.
The difficulty in regards to this is the possibility of an amendment being open to abuse. If for example, an exemption was put forward simply stating dogs handlers regulated and licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and dogs that adhere to the BS8517 Security Dogs Code of Practice were exempt, and an exempted dog attacked someone outside its duties, this could have a hugely damaging effect on the reputation the security profession as well as bringing the effectiveness and legitimacy of the Bill into question.
Also, it could be argued that anyone allowing their dog to behave aggressively could abuse this amendment by citing that their dog is simply being trained as a security dog, or the person is in training to become a security dog handler, when this is not the case.
We would therefore appreciate any comments or suggestions from those linked to the field as to how best to approach this task. I would like to reiterate that DDASG does not wish to see responsible dog handlers and owners penalised. The intention of the Bill is to deal with those owners that give others a bad name whilst better protecting the public by dealing with potentially dangerous dogs at the first signs of problem behaviour.
If you have any comments on suggestions please contact Victoria Brown, Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group (DDASG) Coordinator by emailing victoria.brown@thekennelclub.org.uk

NASDU is especially proud of this achievement as it was the NASDU Code of Practice that at the request of BSI was used as the basis for these first ever British Standards in Security Dog Handling.

TRADING STANDARDS
Over the past few months NASDU has received a large volume of calls from both Members and non Members regarding Companies who advertise that they are NASDU Members, when they are not, this in breech of the "Supply of Goods & Services Act" for which a prosecution can be bought by Trading Standards.
In addition to the unauthorised use of our logo a number of these Companies and Individuals are delivering below standard services and in some cases inadequate training often with the promise of employment.
To ensure we eradicate these unscrupulous Individuals and Companies from our industry we ask that you contract Trading Standards direct if you have had any unfortunate dealings with these Companies, if it is just the use of our logo you have a concern with please contact NASDU Head Office and we will then contract Trading Standards.
