The Animal Health & Welfare Act - Transportation of Security Dogs
A number of members have contacted Head Office regarding the transportation of security dogs under the above Act, we are pleased to confirm the current situation as follows.
The EU Regulation 102005 came into force early part of this year as part of the Animal Health & Welfare Act 2006. One of the requirements is the authorisation of journeys over 65 km (40 miles) and up to 8 hours.
Whilst these regulations do indeed apply to security dogs there are some exemptions which may assist security dog handlers and companies, the main exemption being: -
1 Dog + 1 Handler - Exempt
2 Dogs + 2 Handlers - Exempt
Unfortunately when we transport a number of dogs (i.e. 2 plus) under the control of one handler then the regulations shall apply and a permit is required. The other thing to remember is that a permit is only required if the journey are over 40 miles (48 hour period)
Finally the application form for a UK animal transporters authorisation permit is not arduous, it is currently free of charge and lasts for 5 years, therefore we advise any member who may in the future transport more than one dog under the control of only one handler on a journey of over 40 miles to apply for a permit.
