HABC LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE FOR GENERAL PURPOSE SECURITY DOG HANDLER

Introduction:
The HABC Level 3 Certificate for a General Purpose Security Dog Handler aims to provide the additional skills, knowledge and understanding required to ensure the provision of a higher level of professional service as a Security Dog Handler.

This qualification has been developed by NASDU to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Security Dog Handling and the training requirements contained within BS 8517-1:2009.


For Whom Suitable:
Experienced General Purpose Security Dog Handlers who wish to advance their existing skills and to meet the requirements of the BS 8517-1: 2009 which recommends Security Dog Handlers undertake continuation training. It would also be suitable for members of HM Armed Forces, Police or Prison Service who wish to take on a General Purpose Security Dog Handler role.

Course Duration:
An approved NASDU Instructor/Trainer shall assess learners existing ability and advise on the number of hours required to achieve the qualification, which shall be a minimum of 100 guided learning hours.

Training would be delivered over a number of weeks and would be of sufficient duration to ensure competency, having a minimum of 100 guided learning hours (GLH).

GLH’s are recorded hours of direct training, structured learning and assessment given to an individual and not the duration of a course.


Programme Structure:
The programme is flexible with a mixture of theory and practical tuition and is made up of 6 Units all of which are compulsory (see content).


Prior Learning:
All learners shall have achieved the Level 2 Award for a General Purpose Security Dog Handler or hold a NASDU Basic General Purpose Dog Handler certificate, having completed a minimum of 50 guided learning hours.

All learners should hold an appropriate S.I.A. Licence (unless exempt) and should be trained and competent in a general Security Officer role.

The learner is also expected to have completed an appropriate number of continuation training hours since their last assessment and provide evidence of this.

Learners who have proven GP dog handling experience as a Police or Prison Officer or a Member of HM Armed Forces within the last 5 years may apply for accreditation of prior learning (APL). A minimum of 15 GLH’s shall be required for final assessment and examination and to confirm understanding of the private security industry dog sector.


Assessment:
Assessment shall be carried out by an Approved NASDU Trainer/Instructor; internal moderation shall be carried out by NASDU with external moderation carried out by HABC.

The mode of assessment shall be by ongoing practical assessment, by question and answer sessions and by a written examination.


Progression:
The successful learner can proceed onto Detection Dog Handling or ultimately onto Security Dog Training. The qualification can also provide underpinning knowledge to assist learners to progress to NVQ’s and higher qualifications.


Certification:
Certificate(s) shall be for the handler and also as a Team i.e. handler and dog.

Achieving this qualification does not automatically entitle an Individual to NASDU Membership; application forms for Membership can be obtained from your Instructor/Trainer or Head Office.
